Caffeine AI adds cloud picker with European, encrypted options

DFINITY’s Caffeine now lets builders pick where apps built with its AI tool run. The project said on Wednesday that Caffeine has added a cloud picker with three choices: IC Mainnet, European Cloud and Encrypted Cloud. IC Mainnet stays the default option for most apps, which keeps the Internet Computer at the center of the setup.

What the new choices mean

European Cloud keeps an app’s compute and storage inside Europe. That matters for teams that need data to stay in a certain region. DFINITY has previously described a European subnet on the Internet Computer as a step toward applications that fit GDPR requirements. The Caffeine announcement, however, did not explain how this new option is built or what infrastructure sits behind it.

Encrypted Cloud keeps an app’s memory encrypted with AMD chip security. AMD’s Secure Encrypted Virtualization encrypts virtual machine memory, and the SEV-SNP generation introduced in 2020 adds protection against host manipulation, according to an academic paper on confidential virtual machines. The source copy does not name the exact AMD technology used by Encrypted Cloud. That leaves some technical questions open, perhaps until DFINITY publishes more detail.

Builders can switch before launch

The cloud choice is not fixed at the start of a project. Builders can change an app’s cloud in project settings at any time before it goes live. That gives teams room to test an idea first and decide on hosting later. It also means the picker is less about a one-time setup step and more about a setting that can be revisited.

Caffeine itself lets users create apps through natural language prompts. VentureBeat reported that apps made through the platform run on the Internet Computer rather than traditional cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services. The same report quoted DFINITY founder Dominic Williams as saying Caffeine was centralized at the time and that the team wanted it to run on the Internet Computer in future.

What is still missing

The update gives builders more control over hosting and data location. For teams with regional data rules or stricter confidentiality needs, the new options may be worth a look. Still, the announcement did not include pricing, performance figures or details on how the options differ in cost. Builders will likely need more information before making a final call on which cloud fits their app.
